Linseed Oil (Linum usitatissimum) - also known as Flaxseed Oil
Omega-Rich Repairing Hair & Scalp Treatment Mask
Linseed (Flaxseed) oil is a powerhouse of Omega-3 fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid), known for its exceptional anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties. This makes it an excellent choice for nourishing dry, brittle hair, soothing irritated scalps, and promoting overall hair health and shine. This intensive mask aims to deeply condition, reduce frizz, and support a healthy scalp environment.
Best For: Dry, damaged, or brittle hair; flaky or irritated scalp; promoting hair elasticity and shine.
Experience Level: Beginner
Ingredients:
- 30ml Linseed Oil
- 15ml Coconut Oil (melted if solid)
- 1 tablespoon Raw Honey (for its humectant properties)
- 5-7 drops Rosemary Oil for scalp stimulation and hair growth promotion.
- Optional: 3-5 drops Peppermint Oil for a cooling, invigorating scalp sensation (use with caution if scalp is very sensitive).
- Optional: 1 egg yolk (for extra protein and lecithin, makes the mask richer but also requires refrigeration and immediate use).
Equipment:
- Small mixing bowl
- Whisk or fork
- Shower cap
- Measuring spoons
Instructions:
- Prepare Ingredients: If your Coconut Oil is solid, gently melt it by placing the container in a bowl of warm water until it liquefies. Do not overheat.
- Combine Oils & Honey: In the small mixing bowl, combine 30ml of Linseed Oil, 15ml of melted Coconut Oil, and 1 tablespoon of raw honey. Whisk together until well blended.
- Add Macerated Oils: Add 5-7 drops of Rosemary Oil. If using, add the Peppermint essential oil at this stage. Whisk again to incorporate.
- Add Egg Yolk (Optional): If using, add the egg yolk to the mixture and whisk thoroughly until the mask is smooth and creamy.
- Note: if adding egg yolk, the mask must be used immediately and any leftovers discarded.
Application:
Apply the mask to dry or slightly damp hair. Start by massaging it into the scalp, then work it through the lengths and ends of your hair, ensuring even coverage.
Treatment Time:
Once applied, cover your hair with a shower cap to trap heat and help the oils penetrate. Leave the mask on for at least 30 minutes to an hour. For a deeper treatment, you can leave it on for up to 2 hours (if not using egg yolk).
Rinse & Wash:
Rinse the mask out thoroughly with warm water. Follow with your usual shampoo and conditioner. You might need to shampoo twice to remove all oil residue, especially if you have fine hair.
Storage:
If made without egg yolk and stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark place, the oil-honey mixture can last for a week or two. If egg yolk is added, it is for single, immediate use only.
How to Use:
- Use this intensive treatment mask once or twice a week, depending on your hair’s needs.
Creative Customization & Expert Tips:
- For Very Dry Scalp: Consider adding 5ml of Castor Oil to the mix for its intense moisturizing and anti-inflammatory benefits for the scalp.
- Scent Variation: Swap Rosemary oil for Lavender Oil for a more calming and soothing scalp experience.
- Hot Oil Treatment: For an enhanced effect (if not using egg), gently warm the Linseed and Coconut oil mixture (before adding honey and essential oils) by placing the bowl in a larger bowl of hot water. Ensure it's comfortably warm, not hot, before applying to avoid scalp burns.
- Soap Making Consideration: Linseed oil is not commonly used in large quantities in soap making due to its high Omega-3 content, which can lead to a faster-oxidizing soap (dreaded orange spots - DOS) and a softer bar if used in high percentages. However, in very small amounts (e.g., 1-3% of total oils), it can contribute its conditioning properties. It has a high iodine value (INV), indicating its unsaturated nature. Experienced soap makers might use it sparingly in specialized recipes, always ensuring proper SAP value calculation and understanding its impact on shelf life and bar hardness.
