Castor Oil (Ricinus communis)

Lash & Brow Fortifying Serum with Castor & Rosemary

Harness the legendary strengthening and growth-promoting properties of Castor oil, a thick, nutrient-rich elixir traditionally used to enhance lashes, brows, and hair. Combined with the stimulating essence of Rosemary oil, this serum aims to nourish follicles, encourage thickness, and promote a fuller appearance for your lashes and eyebrows. This recipe is perfect for those seeking a natural solution to sparse or thinning lashes and brows.

Best For: Strengthening lashes and brows, promoting thickness, conditioning hair follicles.

Experience Level: Beginner

Ingredients:

  • 15ml Castor Oil
  • 15ml  Sweet Almond Oil ( Avocado Oil for extra nourishment)
  • 2-3 spoons of Rosemary Oil
  • Optional: 1 spoon of Lavender Oil for its soothing properties and pleasant scent.
  • Optional: Contents of 1 Vitamin E capsule (pierce and squeeze out the oil) for added antioxidant benefits and preservation.

Equipment:

  • Clean, empty mascara tube with a clean wand, or a small, dark glass dropper bottle (approx. 30ml capacity)
  • Small funnel
  • Measuring spoons or small graduated cylinder

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Your Workspace & Equipment: Ensure your workspace, chosen container (mascara tube or dropper bottle), and all utensils are meticulously clean. If reusing a mascara tube, ensure it is thoroughly washed and dried to prevent contamination.
  2. Measure Oils: Carefully measure 15ml of Castor Oil and 15ml of Sweet Almond Oil (or Avocado Oil). The addition of a lighter oil like Sweet Almond or Avocado helps to make the viscous Castor oil easier to apply and less sticky, while still delivering its potent benefits.
  3. Combine Oils: Using the small funnel, pour the Castor oil and the chosen secondary carrier oil into your clean mascara tube or dropper bottle.
  4. Add Macerated Oils & Vitamin E: Add 2-3 spoons of Rosemary Oil. If using, add the Lavender Oil and the contents of the Vitamin E capsule at this stage.
  5. Mix Gently: If using a mascara tube, insert the wand and swirl gently to mix. If using a dropper bottle, cap it tightly and roll it gently between your palms for about 30 seconds to combine the oils thoroughly.
  6. Label and Store: Label your container with the name of the product ("Lash & Brow Fortifying Serum") and the date it was made. Store in a cool, dark place. Use within 3-6 months for best results, especially if not using Vitamin E.

How to Use:

  • Ensure your lashes and brows are clean and free of makeup.
  • Using the clean mascara wand or a cotton swab (if using a dropper bottle), carefully apply a small amount of the serum to your eyelashes from root to tip, and/or to your eyebrows.
  • Apply nightly before bed. Be careful not to get the serum directly into your eyes. If irritation occurs, discontinue use.
  • Consistency is key; results may take several weeks or months to become noticeable.

Creative Customization & Expert Tips:

  • Hairline Boost: A small amount can also be massaged into the hairline to encourage growth in sparse areas.
  • Nail & Cuticle Conditioner: The same blend can be used as a nourishing treatment for dry, brittle nails and cuticles.
  • Patch Test: While Castor oil is generally safe, it's always wise to perform a patch test on a small area of skin (e.g., behind the ear or on the inner arm) 24 hours before applying to the delicate eye area, especially if you have sensitive skin or are prone to allergies.
  • Soap Making Consideration: Castor oil is a popular ingredient in soap making, known for contributing to a stable, conditioning lather and creamy texture. It's typically used at 5-10% of the total oils in a cold process soap recipe. Its high ricinoleic acid content makes it unique. Experienced soap makers can incorporate it to enhance these qualities in their bars. Remember to accurately calculate its SAP value for your recipe.
